The Baths in Bath

The hot mineral waters that flow from the earth and rise into The Kings Spring as well as two others nearby are the reason why this beautiful city was built here in the first place. The waters are 120 degrees Fahrenheit and 6 gallons flows out of the springs every second which totals around 182 million gallons per year.

Long ago when Bath was just composed of a steaming noisy swamp where most people avoided. Bladud, was exiled from the Kings court and he had a very bad disfiguring skin disease. He took charge around Bath of a herd of pigs. His pigs later developed also a bad skin disease which worried Bladud. What he noticed was the pigs wallowing in the foul hot muddy area and their skin condition was improving dramatically. So what he did was wallow himself in the foul muddy steaming area.

His own skin condition improved, and he returned to court and later became King of England, where he decided to build his capital on the site of these miraculous hot mud baths. When the Romans invaded England in AD43, they controlled and walled the springs with a beautiful Mediterranean style decor and the honey coloured stone was quarried locally. They built the baths, temples, theatres, palaces and villas. Their reign lasted for almost 400 years and then when invasion happened, it all sank back into the mud, all lying between 10 and 15 feet underground below the present day city.
