Bristol was historically the second largest city in England sitting on the Avon as it flowed into the British Channel. It has been renowned through the centuries as one of the country's most important ports handling nearly all trade with Ireland. The city is famous for its Brunel sites thanks to the engineer Isambard Kingdom Brunel who built the Great Western Railway between Bristol and London thus increasing the importance of Bristol. In the late eighteen hundreds he built the SS Great Britain, the forerunner to modern propeller driven ships and the famous Clifton Suspension Bridge that extends the Avon Gorge.
