Chippenham is a market town in the Cotswolds in the north of Wiltshire. It lies on the River Avon that runs through the park in the town centre. As a market town its focal point is the market square surrounded by historic buildings, the fifteenth century Yelde Hall, the Buttercross and St. Andrew's Church. It is historically remembered as the early home of Alfred the Great who kept a hunting lodge in the town. It was also the site of his great victory over the Danes. The town also circles the medieval town of Sheldon and its remains can be found in the Sheldon Manor, the country's oldest inhabited manor house dating from the late twelve hundreds.
