Glastonbury is a town in Somerset that is bathed in mystic legend and Christian myth. While many of them cannot be verified, Glastonbury is known for its fourth century ruined Abbey that holds the tombs of three Saxon Kings and supposedly the choir holds the tombs of Arthur and Guinevere. This supports the idea that Glastonbury is indeed ancient Avalon. The abbey was founded according to legend by Joseph of Arimathea who brought the Holy Grail here and placed his staff or Glastonbury Thorn at the back of the abbey from which the thorn tree grew. The resting place of the Holy Grail is considered to be the Chalice Well on Wellhouse Lane. Nearby is the hill of Glastonbury Tor, a two hundred metre hill topped by St Michael's Tower that dates from the fourteenth century.
